Poetic Truths of Home and Motherhood
The book "Eye Mama" is a photography portfolio that showcases the mother's narrative and the mother's gaze, what female and non-binary photographers see when they look at and into "the home."
Based on the Eye Mama project, a photography platform where photographers around the world who identify as mamas share a curated feed, the Eye Mama book brings together more than 200 images to make visible what is so often invisible - caregiving, motherhood, family and the post-motherhood self.
"Eye Mama" was created by BAFTA-nominated filmmaker and photographer Karni Arieli during the pandemic, when everyone in the world was locked down and spending more time at home, often completely absorbed in caregiving and nursing. At the heart of the visual movement is the "mama gaze," an introspective look at home and caregiving by female and non-binary visual artists.
This iconic photo book brings together the images of this movement, showing the light and dark sides of care and parenting, the beauty of close-ups, love and hardship, and above all, the personal poetic truths of these moms and artists.
The "Eye Mama" book sheds light on the history of motherhood and lets us see through the eyes of moms all over the world for the first time in history, because the moms' eyes count!
With additional contributions from Alessia Glaviano, Head of Global Photo Vogue, and Annie Wang, internationally renowned photographer and artist.
